Before packing
Preliminary checks, documentation, inventory and decisions to complete before choosing packaging materials and a shipping service.
Not every item should be shipped at any cost. Before packing, assess value, fragility, weight, dimensions, access to suitable materials and distance.
A very heavy, rare or delicate item, or one without an adequate container, may require a specialised service or local handover. Shipping is a logistics decision, not an automatic step in a sale.
If you cannot build packaging that prevents movement and protects vulnerable areas, change the delivery method rather than trying to compensate with more tape or random filler.
Before packing, photograph the item from several sides and record details that may matter after delivery: finish, corners, displays, connectors, hardware, serial number and included accessories.
Document existing defects as well. The most useful evidence is not a dramatic photo, but a clear sequence showing the condition of the item before it entered the parcel.
Keep the original files at least until the transaction and any applicable dispute window for the service used have ended.
Make a list of everything actually being shipped: instrument, case, power supply, cables, manuals, original parts, pedals, footswitches or other accessories.
Small heavy objects deserve special attention: a power supply left loose inside a case can become an impact hazard during transport.
Group, protect and secure accessories separately. Before closing the parcel, compare the contents against what was agreed with the buyer.
Do not calculate shipping from the manufacturer’s published product weight. The final parcel includes the case, boxes, protective materials, accessories and sealing materials.
Measure the length, width, height and weight of the finished parcel. An error can affect price, available services or whether the shipment is accepted.
If the packaging changes after weighing, check the figures again before generating or attaching the label.
Before preparing an expensive shipment, check the current terms of the carrier and the exact service selected.
Verify weight and size limits, prohibited goods, rules for batteries or unusual components, packaging requirements, service areas and any coverage exclusions.
Do not assume that a parcel accepted for transport is automatically covered for damage. Acceptance, liability and optional coverage may be governed by different terms.
