Rack toms and floor toms

Drum toms are primarily defined by diameter, depth and position within the kit. Rack toms use a mount or suspension system, while floor toms commonly use dedicated legs. When adding a single drum, verify that its size, finish and mounting method fit the existing setup.

Inspect bearing edges, hoops, tension rods and mounts. Drumheads must match the actual shell diameter, while drum hoops must also match the lug count. Check floor-tom legs and brackets or the rack-tom arm included with the drum.

Matching a used tom to a kit

A similar finish does not prove that a drum belongs to the same series or generation. If cosmetic and hardware consistency matter, ask for model codes, badges and exact dimensions. For a working expansion, shell integrity and mounting compatibility may be the more important criteria.
