A pickup swap starts with footprint and mounting

Before comparing magnets or output figures, confirm that the pickup physically fits. Traditional single-coil, humbucker and P-90 formats use different routes and mounting systems. Humbucker baseplates can also have different leg lengths and pole spacing, particularly in the bridge position.

A pickup that needs body routing is not a direct replacement even if the wiring is compatible.

Construction labels do not define one sound

A conventional single-coil uses one coil and is susceptible to electromagnetic hum. A humbucker uses paired coils arranged to cancel much of that noise. P-90 pickups are single-coils too, but their dimensions and construction differ from a Strat-style unit.

Within each family, winding, inductance, magnets, pickup position, height and the guitar's circuit change the result. DC resistance or an “output” label is therefore only part of the specification.

Wiring options depend on the lead configuration

Four-conductor humbuckers can support coil splitting, series/parallel switching and phase options when the rest of the circuit is wired for them. Two-conductor versions provide fewer options. Do not assume wire colours are standard across brands; use the maker's diagram.

Active pickups introduce power requirements and often use different pot values and switching hardware. Battery placement and output-jack wiring are part of the conversion.

Set pickup height after installation

Mounting height affects level and response. The correct distance is pickup- and instrument-specific, and should be adjusted with the guitar strung and set up. Mechanical clearance matters as much as signal level.
