Count recordable inputs, not the marketing total

An audio interface connects microphones, instruments, the computer and monitoring. Start by separating simultaneously recordable analogue inputs from digital expansion. A headline '10 in / 10 out' figure may include ADAT or S/PDIF channels that need additional hardware.

For voice and guitar, look for suitable mic preamps, phantom power and a Hi-Z input. Drum or band sessions need more microphone channels or a clear expansion path. Hardware-synth and outboard users may care more about line I/O than about additional mic preamps.

Latency is a system behaviour

Buffer size, driver quality, operating system, DAW and routing all contribute to latency. A high maximum sample rate does not tell you how responsive monitoring will feel. Direct monitoring bypasses much of the software round trip; more capable interfaces add internal mixers and separate cue mixes.

If you already own external microphone preamps, verify proper line inputs. For expansion, check ADAT, S/PDIF or other digital formats and how the interface can work with AD/DA converters.

Output routing matters as the studio grows

One monitor pair is enough for many compact rigs. Multiple output pairs, independent headphones and flexible routing become useful for cue mixes, reamping and analogue inserts. Studio headphones also vary in impedance and sensitivity, so headphone-output capability matters.

Used interfaces: software support can be the limiting factor

Before buying, confirm drivers for your current OS, firmware, control software, the physical computer connection and the correct power supply. Test every input, gain control, phantom circuit, output and headphone socket. Match the interface to the microphones and sources you will actually record rather than to its largest specification number.
