Drum hardware: stable enough without carrying unnecessary mass

Stands, clamps and mounts have to hold their position under repeated vibration. The useful comparison is not simply light versus heavy. Tube diameter, joint design, single- or double-braced legs, memory locks and transport size all affect daily use.

For cymbal stands, check maximum height, straight or boom arm, tilter range and the condition of felts, sleeves and threads. For tom mounts and multi-clamps, measure the actual tubes and identify the interface.

Inspecting used stands and mounts

Open and close each joint where possible. Worn threads, slipping wing nuts, ovalised tubes and excessive play can make a stand unreliable even when the chrome looks clean. Surface corrosion may be cosmetic; cracks, bent sections and repaired welds are more significant.

A setup may also require drum pedals and drum hoops. Crash cymbals need stands appropriate for their placement and weight.

Fit within the rest of the kit

Do not assume every rack and stand shares the same tube diameter. The same applies to memory locks and clamps. Check measurements and ask whether all joining pieces are included. More mechanical components are grouped under drum parts; complete kits are under drums.
