Pick the tuner around how it receives the note

Clip-on tuners sense vibration through the instrument. Pedal tuners take their input from the signal chain and are useful when silent tuning is part of a live rig. Handheld units may offer a microphone, a jack input or both.

That difference matters more than the label “guitar tuner”. A bassist on a pedalboard, an acoustic player at home and a brass player in a rehearsal room are solving different input problems.

Chromatic mode gives you more freedom

A chromatic tuner recognises all twelve pitch classes, which makes alternate tunings straightforward. Dedicated guitar or bass modes can speed up routine tuning, but they are convenience features rather than a substitute for accuracy.

Accuracy is normally specified in cents or fractions of a cent. Fine strobe-style displays can be useful for intonation and setup work; everyday tuning may not require the same level of visual resolution.

Some tuners let you change the reference pitch from the common A=440 Hz setting. That can matter when matching an ensemble or an existing recording.

Readability matters on stage

A tuner that is difficult to see is difficult to use. Compare display size, brightness, viewing angle and how quickly the indication settles. Pedal users should also check mute behaviour, bypass, power requirements and jack placement.

A separate metronome can be a better practice companion than choosing a tuner only because it includes extra rhythm features.

Used tuner checklist

Test the display, switches and battery compartment. On a clip-on model, check the clamp and swivel. On a pedal, verify both input and output and operate the footswitch several times.
