Pot value and taper describe different things

A guitar potentiometer has an electrical resistance value and a response curve. 250 kΩ and 500 kΩ are common in passive guitar circuits, but neither is a universal standard. Changing the value changes the load on the pickup, so a pot replacement should start from the original schematic or measured component.

Audio/log and linear tapers describe how resistance changes across the rotation. They can feel very different as volume or tone controls. Manufacturer markings are not always interpreted identically, so the actual part specification is the safer reference.

Mechanical fit causes many replacement problems

Split and solid shafts use different knob designs. Thread diameter, shaft length and metric versus imperial standards can also prevent a part from fitting even when the resistance value is correct. Thick carved tops may require a longer threaded section than a pickguard-mounted control.

Check the knob too: push-on splined knobs and screw-fixed knobs are not automatically interchangeable.

Switching pots need cavity space

Push-pull and push-push pots combine a potentiometer with a switch and are widely used for coil splitting and other wiring options. The extra switch body makes them deeper, which can be a problem in shallow control cavities. Concentric pots add another type of mechanical and knob compatibility to verify.

Diagnose noise before replacing parts. Scratchy controls can come from contamination, a worn track, a poor solder joint or grounding. If replacement is necessary, photograph the original wiring and label connections before removing the component. That is particularly important in guitars with non-standard switching.
