Bass amp heads: read power and impedance together
A bass amp head drives one or more bass cabinets and its output is normally specified at particular load impedances. Do not compare two heads from maximum wattage alone. Check the power delivered into the load you plan to use and the amplifier's minimum permitted impedance.
If the rig uses two cabinets, calculate or verify the resulting total load according to the manufacturer's connection method. Multiple speaker outputs do not automatically mean that any pair of cabinets is safe to connect.
DI, EQ and stage functions
For live use, check how the DI/XLR output behaves: pre/post EQ selection, output level, ground lift and mute options vary. Compression, filtering, drive and effects loops should also be evaluated by their actual controls and routing rather than by the feature name alone.
Aux inputs, headphone outputs and mute functions can make a compact head useful for practice. Weight and size matter for transport, but ventilation and required output remain part of the decision.
Used bass-head checks
Test the instrument input, DI, speaker outputs, effects loop, fan if fitted and every control. Listen for intermittent level or unusual noise and inspect loose connectors. Confirm the correct power supply, footswitch and rack hardware where relevant. If you want speakers built into the same enclosure, compare bass combo amps; for the broader category, return to amplifiers.
From a broad category to a precise comparison
Choosing Bass Head requires more than finding two listings with the same label. Compare the complete model code, revision and included equipment because a version made for another instrument, market or production period may use different dimensions, connections or compatible parts. When the listing does not show those details, request photographs of labels and decision-making areas before comparing price.
Use bass cabinets, bass combo amps and amplifiers to confirm that the item belongs in the intended branch. This prevents a complete system, an accessory and a replacement part from being treated as equivalents. The category guides discovery; the individual listing must then establish identity, operation and everything included in the sale.
