Batter and resonant drumheads

Drumheads are not interchangeable simply because the diameter matches. Batter and resonant heads, single- and double-ply construction, clear or coated finishes, dots and built-in damping address different needs. Start with the drum's actual diameter and the intended position on that drum.

Snare, tom and bass-drum requirements

The snare-side head on a snare drum is much thinner than a normal batter head. Drum toms can use different batter/resonant combinations. A bass drum may also use impact patches, damping or a ported front head.

Used drumheads

A used head is only useful when its condition and price justify the remaining life. Check dents, worn coating, collar deformation and deep stick marks. Used heads may be practical for unusual sizes or specific restoration needs, while a routine replacement is often easier to assess when new.
