Single or double bass-drum pedal
The first decision is single versus double pedal. A double pedal adds a second beater through a linkage and needs enough room around the hi-hat and snare. Choose it for the technique and layout you need rather than for a genre label.
Drive system, cam and adjustment range
Chain, double-chain, strap and direct-drive mechanisms use different mechanical layouts. Cam shape, beater angle, spring tension and footboard angle also change the feel. The practical question is which adjustments you need and whether they can be set and repeated easily.
On a used pedal, check bearing and hinge play, drive wear, springs, threads and hoop clamp. On double pedals, inspect the connecting shaft as well. Cosmetic footboard wear is less important than looseness or missing parts.
Fit with the kick drum and stands
The hoop clamp must suit the bass drum. Also check the available space around drum hardware and stands. If several components are being replaced, browse drum parts and the full drums category.
