Connector type is only the first filter
An audio cable should match the signal path. A 1/4-inch TS instrument cable and a 1/4-inch TRS line cable share a familiar plug diameter but are wired for different jobs. Three-pin XLR cables are common for microphones and balanced line connections, while RCA remains common on consumer, DJ and some line-level equipment.
Check the input and output manuals before assuming that two sockets are equivalent. If the physical formats differ, an adapter may help, but it does not automatically solve signal-level or wiring differences.
Balanced and unbalanced connections
With compatible equipment, balanced wiring uses a pair of signal conductors plus shielding to reject noise picked up along the run. A typical guitar lead is unbalanced. The practical rule is simple: use the connection the equipment was designed for rather than converting formats without a reason.
Cable length is part of reliability too. Extra length creates more cable to coil, trip over and store; too little length puts strain on sockets. For gear that is assembled frequently, connector strain relief and a flexible jacket are usually more useful than exotic marketing claims.
What build quality actually changes
Shielding is intended to reduce interference. Conductor construction, capacitance and connector quality are real electrical or mechanical properties, but they should be read as specifications rather than translated into guaranteed tonal adjectives.
For stage and studio work, a cable that coils cleanly, keeps its connectors tight and survives repeated handling has obvious value.
Buying used audio cables
Inspect both ends, then run your hands along the jacket looking for cuts, hard kinks or repaired sections. During a test, move the cable near each connector; intermittent faults often appear under movement. For important signal paths, a continuity test is a sensible final check.
