A guitar multi-effects processor can replace a few pedals or become the control centre of an entire rig. The headline number of included effects matters less than how many blocks can run together, how freely they can be routed and how quickly the required sounds can be recalled.
Start the comparison with signal-chain structure, presets, footswitches and I/O. Some units are compact collections of effects. Others add amplifier and cabinet modelling, complex routing, effects loops, MIDI and USB audio functions. Those features are model-specific rather than standard across the category.

A preset can recall a complete chain. On some processors, scenes or snapshots change several settings inside the same preset, while a stomp mode maps switches to individual blocks. Manufacturers use different names, so compare the actual switching behaviour rather than the label.
For song-based rigs, count the operations required to move between sounds and check whether delay or reverb tails survive a change. For simpler rigs, look at how quickly a drive, boost or modulation block can be toggled without menu navigation.
Digital processors have finite resources. A unit may run many light blocks yet restrict combinations of more demanding algorithms; another may use fixed positions or paths. Build a realistic chain before buying — compressor, drive, amp model, cabinet, modulation, delay and reverb, for example — and confirm that the processor supports the routing you need.
Bit depth and sample rate are technical specifications, not standalone measures of tone quality or playing feel. Preset-change behaviour, overall latency, editing speed and monitor integration are often more relevant to everyday use.
Direct-to-PA or interface setups may need amp and cabinet processing plus outputs suitable for the next device. External pedals require send and return connections. Four-cable-method routing needs enough I/O and an amplifier with an effects loop. MIDI can handle tempo and program changes; USB may provide editing, file transfer or audio, depending on the model.
Expression inputs and external footswitch support also matter when the built-in control surface is not enough.
Test every footswitch, encoder, display, expression pedal, input and output. A switch that double-triggers or a skipping encoder is more important than a cosmetic mark on the chassis.
Then check firmware, factory-reset procedure, editor compatibility and the correct power supply. If the ecosystem uses accounts, downloadable libraries or proprietary software, separate what transfers with the hardware from licences tied to the previous owner's account.
When buying a used modeller, save any useful test preset before a reset and then verify the unit from a clean state. That helps separate old configuration choices from actual hardware or software faults.
