Graphic and parametric EQs solve different jobs

A graphic equalizer gives you fixed frequency bands and an immediate visual curve. A parametric EQ lets you select frequency, gain and, where available, Q or bandwidth. That makes it better suited to targeted shaping, while a graphic unit can be faster for broad system adjustments.

Studio hardware also includes shelving filters, semi-parametric bands and switched-frequency designs. The useful question is not how many controls are visible, but which parameters are actually variable on each band.

Check operating level and I/O before topology

Balanced connections, operating level, headroom and noise need to fit the rest of the chain. If the EQ is stereo, find out whether channels are independent, linked or matched only by manual settings. For an insert around a mixer, electrical compatibility matters as much as the EQ curve.

EQ can be paired with compressors and limiters, but order is part of the design. EQ before compression changes what reaches the detector; EQ after compression shapes a signal whose dynamics have already been controlled.

Used hardware deserves a channel-by-channel test

Move every pot or slider through its range, engage bypass and switches, and compare both channels. Intermittent noise may be a dirty contact or a sign that servicing is due. On digital units, add display, encoder, preset memory and firmware status to the checklist.

If the goal is to raise microphone level, look at microphone preamps instead. Equalization and preamplification are different functions even when they share the same rack.

FAQ

Graphic EQ uses fixed frequency bands. A full parametric EQ lets you choose frequency, gain and Q or bandwidth, so it can target narrower or more specific problems.
There is no universal number. Many fixed graphic bands provide distributed control, while a smaller number of fully parametric bands can be more precise for source shaping.
Exercise every pot or slider, bypass and switch, compare both channels, and listen for noise or level jumps. Also inspect connectors, power supply and signs of previous repairs.
