Musical gear maintenance and value preservation guide
How to maintain, clean, store and document musical instruments and audio gear to reduce deterioration, avoidable failures and loss of value.
An auxiliary input, effects loop, MIDI port, secondary switch or headphone output may remain unused for months.
During periodic checks, test functions that are not part of daily use. This can reveal oxidation, intermittent connections, discharged batteries or lost settings before the function is actually needed.
Record anything you could not verify. “I do not use it” does not mean “it definitely works”.
Periodically inspect installed batteries, power cables and external power supplies.
Remove batteries from equipment that will remain unused for a long period where the documentation permits, particularly when leakage is a concern. Replace cables with damaged insulation, deformed connectors or power supplies showing overheating, noise or abnormal behaviour.
For power supplies, always verify compatible specifications: voltage, available current, polarity and power type must match the equipment requirements.
A case can reduce dust and accidental damage, but it does not automatically make a room that is too damp, hot or prone to condensation safe.
Store the item dry and do not close damp cloths, damaged sachets or materials that can transfer substances inside with it. Periodically check for odours, mould, corrosion or changes in the case itself.
Foam, adhesives and internal linings can also age; if they begin to crumble or become sticky, avoid prolonged contact with the gear.
A replaced part does not necessarily need to be discarded.
On valuable, older or modified gear, keeping original components, labels, documents and photographs can help reconstruct the previous configuration. Clearly state whether a removed part is working, faulty or untested.
There is no need to retain every worthless consumable; keep items that have documentary, technical or historical relevance.
Before significant service, clarify the objective and priorities: reliability, originality, reversibility, cost or cosmetic recovery.
For vintage or collectable gear, ask to be informed before replacements that are not required for safety and, where appropriate, request removed parts back. For modern equipment, following official procedures and restoring full functionality may matter more.
A service report listing replaced components and identified faults increases the documentary value of the work.
On some instruments, an original faulty or worn part may retain documentary value even if it is no longer suitable for use.
If replacement is necessary, photograph the previous configuration, record the reason and keep the component where it makes sense. Do not later present it as working if it is not.
Reversibility is not always possible or desirable, but knowing what was changed makes future valuation much more transparent.
Before selling or storing an item for a long period:
- perform a functional check;
- clean it without hiding defects;
- photograph condition and serial number;
- record modifications, repairs and maintenance;
- check batteries and power;
- gather original parts and accessories;
- inspect the case and contact materials;
- avoid unnecessary last-minute cosmetic work.
For a sale, this documentation supports a more accurate description. For storage, it creates a baseline against which the item can be compared when it returns to use.
Changes in action, intonation or tuning stability can have several causes.
Inspect the bridge, saddles, tuners, screws, strap buttons and moving parts before making adjustments. If something has loosened, identify the cause and use correct tools without forcing threads or screw heads.
Work on the truss rod, nut and neck geometry requires greater competence. If you do not understand the system, professional setup is preferable to a sequence of random corrections.
Periodically move controls through their normal travel and test inputs, channels, loops and switching functions that are used less often.
If noise appears, note exactly when it occurs: while turning a control, touching a jack, on one channel only or after several minutes of operation. This information is far more useful than a general description such as “it makes noise”.
Avoid spraying products randomly into potentiometers; both product and procedure must be suitable for the component.
Footswitches, jacks and controls receive repeated mechanical stress.
If a jack begins to move, a control becomes irregular or a switch requires different pressure than normal, do not necessarily wait for complete failure. Check external fasteners and document the behaviour.
Do not overtighten nuts and controls; a simple repair can become more complex if threads, circuit boards or wiring are damaged.
