Cleaning and surface care
How to remove dust, dirt and residues without using products or methods more aggressive than necessary.
Always begin with the simplest effective method: a clean dry cloth, or a lightly damp one where the material allows it.
Solvents, polishes, cleaners, oils and “universal” products can react with finishes, plastics, rubber, printed graphics, adhesives and treated surfaces. Before applying a product, confirm compatibility with the material and, where practical, test an inconspicuous area.
Shinier does not mean better preserved. The purpose of cleaning is to remove contamination without altering the original surface.
A cloth used on oxidised hardware, dirty strings or polished surfaces can transfer residues to delicate finishes.
Use clean, separate cloths for the body, hardware, displays and areas requiring different products. Soft brushes and small vacuum tools can also help with dust, provided they do not scratch or apply force to fragile components.
Keeping cleaning materials organised also reduces the risk of accidentally using the wrong product.
Faders, potentiometers, switches, keyboards, grilles, jacks and gaps can allow liquid to reach hidden areas.
When external cleaning requires a product, apply a minimal amount to the cloth rather than directly to the equipment unless the manufacturer instructs otherwise. Prevent liquid from running toward openings and connectors.
Electrical contact products are not general-purpose cleaners; use them only when appropriate for the component and with the correct procedure.
Light surface oxidation is different from active corrosion, pitting or material that is flaking away.
Periodically inspect metal parts, screws, bridges, tuners, chassis and connectors. If deterioration is progressing, identify the cause first: humidity, perspiration, contaminants, leaks or unsuitable storage.
On vintage gear or original finishes, aggressive cleaning can remove plating, markings or historical patina. When uncertain, document the condition and consider specialist work.
