Environment and storage conditions

Temperature, humidity, light, dust, condensation and other environmental factors that can accelerate deterioration.

Wood, metals, adhesives, plastics and electronic components respond differently to temperature and humidity.

For many instruments, the main problem is not one moderate fluctuation but prolonged exposure to extremes or repeated rapid changes. Avoid very damp rooms, overheated attics, cold basements and locations next to radiators or air-conditioning outlets.

Where the manufacturer specifies a storage range, use it as the reference. For climate-sensitive instruments, monitoring the environment over time is more useful than constantly making aggressive corrections.

Direct sunlight can rapidly heat surfaces and cases, as well as encouraging fading and ageing in some materials.

Do not leave gear for long periods in front of windows, in closed vehicles, beside radiators or on equipment that produces substantial heat. A case does not remove the problem: it may slow temperature change, but it can also retain heat.

If an item has become very hot or very cold, allow it to return gradually toward room conditions before use or adjustment.

Bringing cold equipment rapidly into a warm, humid room can encourage condensation on surfaces and, in worse cases, internally.

This is particularly relevant to electronics, digital instruments and equipment transported in winter. Avoid powering it immediately when condensation is a realistic possibility; allow the item to approach room temperature gradually.

The same caution applies before making adjustments to wooden instruments that have just arrived from very different climatic conditions.

Dust and residues are not only cosmetic. They can accumulate in gaps, fans, potentiometers, faders, mechanisms and connectors.

Smoke, aerosols and marine environments can leave harder-to-remove deposits and encourage corrosion or sticky surfaces. After use in demanding environments, careful external cleaning and inspection of exposed points is more useful than waiting for an annual service.

Do not blow contamination deeper into equipment or spray products into controls without a procedure suitable for that component.
