How to choose, verify, test and buy used musical gear with a practical process, from initial research to post-purchase checks.

With digital products, hardware operation is only part of the assessment.

Where relevant, verify:

  • loading and saving presets;
  • internal memory;
  • system version;
  • boot time and abnormal freezes;
  • compatibility with editors or drivers you plan to use;
  • any transferable libraries, licences or content.

Do not assume that software, plug-ins or libraries shown in the listing automatically transfer with the hardware.

Ask the seller to clearly distinguish what belongs physically to the instrument from anything tied to separate accounts or licences.

Before comparing prices or condition, you need to know exactly what you are looking at.

Whenever possible, verify:

  • brand and complete model name;
  • series or generation;
  • year or production period;
  • country of manufacture;
  • hardware or firmware revision where relevant;
  • original configuration and finish;
  • any special edition.

Two products with almost identical names may use different components, specifications and market values. Serial numbers, labels, rear panels and construction details can help distinguish versions.

Only after correct identification does it make sense to compare the price with genuinely equivalent examples.

Where the product type uses one, a serial number can help verify the model, production period and consistency of the photographed item.

It may also be useful to ask for:

  • the original purchase receipt, if available;
  • service or repair documentation;
  • certificates or documentation for special editions;
  • information about modifications made over time.

Lack of the original receipt does not automatically make a used item problematic. However, for expensive, rare or heavily modified gear, a better documented history reduces uncertainty.

Do not unnecessarily publish or redistribute personal information contained in documents you receive.

Not every defect has the same significance. Divide what you find into three groups.

Cosmetic wear: scratches, small dents, fading or ordinary signs of use.

Technical wear: worn frets, noisy pots, tired switches, loose connectors or internal batteries that may need replacement.

Functional or structural problems: cracks, major repairs, dead channels, faulty displays, unstable power or other essential functions that are compromised.

This distinction helps both with the buying decision and with estimating the cost and priority of later work. Always ask which issues are already known to the seller.

Stop if the payment stage suddenly introduces a process different from the one you agreed.

For example:

  • a new recipient;
  • a link sent by chat or email;
  • a request to split payment without a clear reason;
  • an unexpected intermediary;
  • sudden urgency;
  • requests for codes, passwords or credentials.

This does not automatically prove fraud, but it changes the transaction and calls for independent verification before proceeding.

If anything is unclear, return to official channels and do not send money until you fully understand the process.

Once the item arrives, repeat the test calmly in your own environment.

Use a complete sequence:

  1. external inspection;
  2. power-up or basic operation;
  3. core functions;
  4. the inputs and outputs you will use;
  5. important secondary controls;
  6. a reasonable extended test.

A previous video only demonstrates what was visible at that moment; it does not replace checking the actual item that arrived.

If you discover a problem, note when it appears, under which configuration and how it can be reproduced. This makes it much easier to explain to the seller or a technician.

Inspect the areas most likely to receive impact or stress: headstock, neck joint, bridge, body edges and mounting points.

Look for:

  • cracks or unusual finish lines;
  • traces of glue;
  • added holes;
  • modified routing;
  • disclosed repairs;
  • parts that appear misaligned.

Not every repair makes an instrument unreliable. A professional repair can be perfectly stable, but it should be known, described and reflected in the overall valuation.

If you cannot distinguish a simple finish crack from a structural issue, ask a qualified technician before buying.

Listen to the amplifier both when idle and while playing single notes, chords and stronger transients.

Pay attention to:

  • excessive hum;
  • intermittent crackle;
  • cabinet vibration;
  • a speaker scraping or distorting abnormally;
  • unstable volume;
  • noise that changes when touching pots or jacks.

A high-gain amplifier may naturally be noisier than a clean channel, so always judge the behaviour in relation to the channel and settings being used.

If a problem appears only after several minutes, note it. Intermittent faults can be harder to diagnose.

For a digital effect, test the management functions as well as the audio path.

Check:

  • loading and changing presets;
  • display operation;
  • encoders and buttons;
  • saving an edit when safe to do so;
  • USB, MIDI or Bluetooth if important to your use;
  • power supply compatibility;
  • any obvious reset or lock issue.

You do not need to test every advanced feature, but you should verify the functions that determine how you will actually use the unit.

If software access or an account is required, clarify before buying which elements depend on the previous owner.

If you discover an undisclosed problem, avoid immediately making repairs or modifications that could make the received condition harder to reconstruct.

First:

  • photograph or record the problem where possible;
  • note the steps required to reproduce it;
  • compare it with the listing description;
  • contact the seller clearly;
  • check any applicable platform, payment-provider or carrier procedure.

A problem may also result from configuration, cables, power or compatibility, so rule out simple causes without unnecessarily altering the item.

The goal is to preserve a verifiable description of the condition as received before deciding how to resolve it.
