Test the instrument
A method for organising a test and checking operation, wear and defects according to the type of gear.
Before powering the amplifier on, inspect everything that can be checked externally.
Verify:
- mains cable and power inlet;
- switches and accessible fuses;
- loose or damaged connectors;
- cabinet, grille and visible speakers;
- unusual burnt smell;
- signs of liquid exposure or significant impact.
Do not open the chassis for an informal test. Amplifiers, especially valve designs, can contain dangerous voltages even after being switched off. Internal inspection should be left to qualified personnel.
If anything suggests a serious electrical issue, do not continue the test.
When testing used gear, follow the same sequence: identity, physical condition, power-up, core functions, secondary controls and behaviour over time.
Before connecting anything, inspect for damage, missing parts or obvious previous work. Then test essential functions using neutral settings rather than immediately relying on complex presets or configurations.
Next, verify the controls, inputs, outputs and features you actually intend to use. Where possible, leave the unit running for a few minutes to reveal intermittent behaviour.
Write down doubts instead of relying on memory. A methodical test helps distinguish a real fault from a configuration issue or a control you have not yet understood.
Sight along the neck and look for obvious warping, twisting or irregularities. Then play through the entire fingerboard using normal dynamics.
Check:
- fret wear and flattening;
- notes that buzz or choke prematurely;
- unusually high or low action;
- tuning stability;
- any cracks around the headstock or neck area;
- available adjustment range where the seller can document it without invasive work.
A poorly set-up guitar may simply need adjustment, while heavily worn frets or structural issues can require more substantial work.
Do not judge only by the first impression. Try to separate setup, normal wear and actual defects.
Use a power supply that matches the pedal’s specifications. First verify the bypass signal, then engage the effect.
Check:
- power-up and LEDs;
- footswitch;
- bypass;
- battery operation where relevant;
- stability of the power jack;
- signal loss or intermittent behaviour when cables are moved.
Do not improvise voltage or polarity. Incorrect power can damage the unit.
If the pedal requires an unusual power supply, confirm whether it is included or add its cost to the final purchase price.
Play every key from soft to hard and listen for abnormal velocity response or notes that fail to trigger. If the model supports aftertouch, test it across several areas of the keyboard.
Also check:
- pads;
- pitch bend and modulation controls;
- encoders;
- faders and pots;
- buttons;
- display and touchscreen.
A quick musical test can easily miss one defective key. A systematic scan of the control surface is much more reliable.
If some behaviour depends on the current patch, use several sounds so you do not confuse specific programming with a hardware problem.
Turn every control through most of its range rather than testing only the sound you normally use.
Also verify:
- all inputs and outputs;
- secondary switches;
- tap tempo;
- stereo, send/return or loop functions where present;
- expression and external control;
- alternative modes.
A small amount of noise while turning a pot can have several causes, while a control that completely drops the signal or jumps values deserves more attention.
Compare the available functions with the model documentation so you can tell whether something is missing or you are simply using a different mode.
Connect at least the main audio outputs and headphones. If your setup depends on particular ports, test those as well.
Depending on the model, check:
- L/R outputs;
- headphones;
- audio inputs;
- sustain and expression;
- MIDI DIN;
- USB;
- CV/Gate inputs and outputs;
- removable media slots where applicable.
Gently move connectors to check that the signal does not drop because of loose jacks.
You do not need to test a port you will never use, but connections that are critical to your setup should be verified before payment whenever possible.
When you cannot test the item in person, a video can help verify some functions before buying.
Ask for a simple, specific sequence, for example:
- powering the unit on;
- operating the main controls;
- testing relevant inputs or outputs;
- showing the serial number or another detail already visible in the photographs;
- demonstrating a disclosed fault where possible.
The video does not need to be professional. A short clip that answers the specific remaining questions is more useful.
A video does not replace a complete hands-on test and cannot remove every risk, but it can reduce uncertainty about important functions.
Start at moderate volume with simple settings. Test one input and channel at a time, then work through all advertised functions.
Check:
- clean and drive channels;
- gain, EQ and master controls;
- built-in reverb or effects;
- effects loop;
- footswitch if included;
- any attenuator or power modes.
Move pots and switches slowly to detect drop-outs, noise or unusual changes.
A feature that is “never used” can still affect the amplifier’s value. If it has not been tested, make sure it is clearly described as untested.
Check that tuners, bridge, saddles, strap buttons and other mechanical parts are stable and complete.
Then connect the instrument to a clean amplifier and verify:
- every pickup;
- selectors and switches;
- volume and tone controls across their full travel;
- any push-pull controls or active circuits;
- output jack;
- unusual noise while operating the controls.
A slightly noisy pot may only need routine maintenance, while drop-outs, intermittent signal or dead components require a different assessment.
On active instruments, also check the battery compartment and circuit power.
