Building a collection

Criteria for collecting methodically, documenting items and separating personal interest from financial expectations.

A collection becomes more coherent when it has a criterion: a series, period, manufacturer, technology, circuit type or personal theme.

This does not mean every purchase must be rare or expensive. It means knowing why an item belongs in the collection and what information you want to preserve.

Also define what you do not want to collect: duplicates, heavily compromised examples, undocumented items or categories requiring maintenance you cannot support.

A clear criterion reduces impulsive buying and improves research quality.

For each item, keep a record of identification, serial number, acquisition date, known provenance, condition, replaced parts, service work and accessories.

Add general photographs and details of identifying components. Store documents and files in a structure that will still make sense years later.

A catalogue is not only for resale; it supports maintenance, insurance, inventory and historical research.

Do not rely entirely on memory, especially when several examples from the same series look similar.

In collecting, a “duplicate” may be useful when it documents a transition, variant, different market or materially different configuration.

Before buying a second example of the same model, define what new information or experience it adds.

If the difference is purely cosmetic and outside your collecting criterion, you may tie up budget and space without meaningfully expanding the collection.

Direct comparison of several examples is also an excellent way to recognise production differences and later interventions.

Not every collectible instrument needs to remain unused. It is useful, however, to decide consciously what role each item will have.

A unit used on stage has different reliability, transport and service requirements from an example preserved for research or historical completeness.

If you want to use a highly original item regularly, consider reversible replacement parts, accessories and transport methods that reduce risk.

Preservation does not necessarily mean non-use; it means understanding the cost and risk of use.
