How to value used guitars and basses

For guitars and basses, start by identifying the exact model, series, year and country of manufacture.

Then check:

• fret, neck and truss-rod condition;
• electronics, pickups and controls;
• cracks, breaks or structural repairs;
• bridge, tuners and hardware;
• modifications and included original parts;
• original case or other relevant accessories.

On common instruments, playability and overall condition often matter more than minor cosmetic wear. On vintage or collectible models, originality and provenance can become much more important.

Always compare the same configuration: two guitars with the same commercial name can belong to very different series and value tiers.
