What "market value" really means

The market value of used gear is not automatically the original retail price, the amount its owner hopes to receive, or the highest listing currently visible online.

It is more useful to think of value as a plausible price range in which a specific model, in a given condition, can reasonably find a buyer.

Valuation therefore depends on four elements: exact identification, comparable market data, actual condition and the current market. Two items carrying the same general model name can be worth different amounts because of year, version, finish, modifications, accessories or preservation.

A useful estimate should therefore not only say "it is worth €800". It should explain why, for example, €750–850 is a realistic range and which factors could move the item towards the upper or lower end.
