The basic process is the same for electric, acoustic, and classical guitar. What changes most is how the tuner receives the signal: directly through a cable on an electric guitar, through instrument vibration with a clip-on tuner, or through the microphone on a phone or computer.

Standard guitar tuning: E A D G B E

For a six-string guitar, standard tuning from the lowest, thickest string to the highest, thinnest string is E A D G B E. Fender uses the same sequence as the standard reference and notes that string numbering runs the opposite way: the low E is the 6th string, while the high E is the 1st.

The usual international reference is A4 = 440 Hz. ISO 16:1975 specifies 440 Hz for the reference A; from that reference, equal-tempered pitches can be derived by semitone intervals. In everyday tuning, however, you do not need to chase frequency numbers: a good tuner shows the note and the amount of deviation directly.

How to tune a guitar with a tuner: step by step

For beginners, the simplest option is an electronic tuner: clip-on, pedal, handheld, or a reliable app. The underlying process is the same.

  1. Select standard tuning. If the tuner allows you to choose a reference pitch, 440 Hz is the normal starting point unless you need to match an ensemble or recording that uses a different reference.
  2. Start with the 6th string, low E. Play one open string and let it sustain. Keep the other strings quiet.
  3. Read the displayed note. In guitar mode the tuner may identify the intended string; in chromatic mode it shows the nearest pitch among the twelve notes of the chromatic scale.
  4. If the note is flat, increase string tension gradually. If it is sharp, reduce tension. Make small adjustments as you get close to the target.
  5. Approach the target from below. If you overshoot and go sharp, drop slightly below the note and tune back up. Sweetwater recommends tuning up to pitch to reduce residual slack around the string and tuner post.
  6. Repeat for A, D, G, B, and high E. When all six are done, check them again. Changing the tension of one string can slightly affect the others, especially with floating bridges or freshly installed strings.

One common beginner mistake is watching only the letter. Both outer strings are E, but they are in different octaves: low E is E2 and high E is E4. If a string is far from its target pitch, adjust it cautiously rather than tightening it rapidly until the tuner happens to display an E.

Reading a tuner: flat, sharp, and cents

A tuner compares the incoming frequency with a target note. If the string is flat, its pitch is below the target; if it is sharp, it is above. The center of the display, usually marked as 0, represents the desired pitch.

Many tuners show the deviation in cents. In equal temperament, a semitone is divided into 100 cents, so cents describe very small pitch differences. For normal pre-practice tuning, the useful goal is a stable reading centered on the target. Extremely fine resolution becomes more relevant when working on setup and intonation.

If the display jumps around, check the signal before blaming the tuner: play only one string, let the note sustain briefly, and reduce background noise or other vibrations.

There is no single best format. The right choice depends on the guitar and the environment.

On an electric guitar, a pedal tuner is convenient because it reads the direct instrument signal and can often mute the output while you tune. A clip-on is still a perfectly workable cable-free option.

On an acoustic guitar or classical guitar, a clip-on avoids relying on room volume because it follows vibration through the instrument. A microphone app can work well in a quiet room as long as you play one string at a time and keep the guitar close enough to the microphone.

Electric, acoustic, and classical guitars: does the tuning change?

For a normal six-string guitar, no: standard tuning remains E A D G B E on electric, steel-string acoustic, and classical guitar. The difference is mainly how the instrument behaves and how you capture a clean signal.

Electric guitar

Electric guitars have the advantage of a direct output. With a pedal tuner, connect the instrument to the tuner's input and tune using a clean signal. With a clip-on tuner, you can tune without an amplifier at all.

If you use a floating tremolo, expect to revisit the strings after the first pass: the bridge reacts to changes in total string tension. Small adjustments and repeated checks are more effective than trying to finish each string permanently in one pass.

Acoustic guitar

For an acoustic guitar, a clip-on or microphone is usually the quickest approach. The body produces a strong acoustic signal, but a phone microphone in a noisy room may also pick up speech, music, or another instrument. A clip-on largely avoids that issue by following vibration at the headstock.

Classical guitar

A classical guitar also uses E A D G B E in standard tuning. The important difference often appears after a string change: Yamaha notes that new nylon strings can stretch considerably before they stabilize. Frequent retuning at first is therefore normal. Yamaha's maintenance guidance also warns against aggressively pulling the strings to force the process.

How to tune a guitar without a tuner

You can tune by ear, but you still need one reliable reference note if you want the whole guitar to match concert pitch. Without an external reference, the strings can be correct relative to one another while the entire instrument is slightly high or low.

The traditional fifth-fret method works like this:

  • first tune the low E from a trusted reference;
  • 6th string, 5th fret = A: use it to tune the open 5th string;
  • 5th string, 5th fret = D: tune the 4th string;
  • 4th string, 5th fret = G: tune the 3rd string;
  • 3rd string, 4th fret = B: this is the exception;
  • 2nd string, 5th fret = E: tune the 1st string.

This method is useful for ear training and as a fallback, but for recording, rehearsing with other instruments, or a quick pre-show check, an electronic tuner is more dependable.

Alternate guitar tunings: when E A D G B E is not the goal

Standard tuning is the starting point, not the only option. A chromatic tuner or a tuner with presets can handle many alternate tunings. Common examples include:

  • Drop D: D A D G B E, lowering only the 6th string from E to D;
  • Eb standard: every string one semitone below standard;
  • DADGAD: D A D G A D;
  • Open G: D G D G B D.

Fender includes these and other options in its online guitar tuner. If you tune substantially lower than standard on a regular basis, however, do not treat it as only a tuner setting: string tension and setup still need to make sense for the instrument and the way you play.

The open strings are in tune but chords still sound wrong: what to check

This is where tuning and intonation are often confused. Tuning sets the open strings to the correct pitches; intonation describes how accurately the guitar produces notes as you move up the fingerboard.

A useful electric-guitar check is to compare the open string or its 12th-fret harmonic with the fretted note at the 12th fret. If the open string is correct but the fretted note is noticeably off, more turning of the tuning key will not solve the underlying issue. Saddle adjustment or a broader setup check may be required. If the guitar instead drifts immediately after every tuning pass, look at the context first: newly installed strings, windings that are still settling, loose hardware, or a bridge reacting to tension can require different checks.
