Eventide H9 Harmonizer Gen 2: what changes from H9 and H90

H9 Harmonizer Gen 2 brings Eventide's current library to the H9 format with 74 algorithms, more than 1,000 presets and deeper on-pedal control. Comparing it with H9 Max and H90 shows why single- versus dual-algorithm operation is the key buying distinction.

Eventide released the H9 Harmonizer Gen 2 on June 24, 2026. The name clearly points back to the original H9, but this is more than a routine refresh: Gen 2 brings the current H90 algorithm library to the compact H9 format, adds a redesigned interface and gives you far more control from the pedal itself.

The first distinction to understand before buying one is equally clear. H9 Gen 2 remains a single-algorithm processor, while H90 can combine two algorithms inside one Program, in series or in parallel. That difference matters more than a simple effect count.

H9 Gen 2 at a glance: what actually changed

Eventide specifies 74 algorithms, more than 1,000 presets, ARM processing and compatibility with presets from the earlier H9 platform. The library combines H9 Max and H90 algorithms across delay, reverb, pitch shifting, granular processing, synth, vocal effects, looping and multi-FX.

The other major change is workflow. H9 Gen 2 has a 2.5-inch display, three Quick Knobs, dedicated buttons and four operating modes — Select, Perform, Presets and Parameters — designed to make the hardware itself much more useful for editing and performance.

That table is also why calling Gen 2 a “cheaper H90” would be misleading. The two pedals now share much of the same algorithm family, but their operating architecture is different.

H9 Gen 2 vs H9 Max: the interface is part of the upgrade

H9 Max is still a capable processor. Eventide lists 52 algorithms, 99 onboard presets and more than 500 presets available through H9 Control. Its structural limitation is familiar: it runs one algorithm at a time. Some algorithms contain several processing stages internally, but you cannot freely stack two independent algorithms as you can on the H90.

H9 Gen 2 keeps that single-algorithm concept while expanding the library and changing the relationship with the front panel. Three Quick Knobs and Parameters mode let you edit the sound without having to move every substantial change to an app. For live use, that can matter more than the raw increase in algorithm count.

There is continuity too. Eventide states that Gen 2 is fully compatible with H9 Classic presets, so an existing preset library does not have to be rebuilt from scratch.

H9 Gen 2 vs H90: the same effect family, two different workflows

The cleanest way to compare the two is through routing.

H9 Gen 2 runs one algorithm at a time. H90 uses a dual-algorithm design: each Program can contain two algorithms, routed in series or parallel. H90 also provides two mono inserts that can work as one stereo insert, plus Dual Mode for processing two independent stereo signals.

In practice, H90 is the stronger choice when a rig needs combinations such as delay + reverb, pitch + modulation or two separate processing paths without handing part of the job to another pedal. H9 Gen 2 is deliberately simpler: it delivers Eventide's current algorithm library in a compact box, but if your goal is to stack two separate Eventide algorithms in one unit, H90 remains the relevant model.

One detail prevents another common misunderstanding. An Eventide algorithm can itself contain multiple processing elements, so “one algorithm” does not necessarily mean “one basic effect.” H90's advantage is the ability to load and combine two independent algorithms.

H9 Gen 2 controls, routing and connections

Gen 2 provides two 1/4-inch inputs and two outputs for instrument- or line-level operation, five-pin MIDI In and Out/Thru, expression and auxiliary control inputs, and USB-C.

For routing, Eventide documents Wet/Dry and Pre/Post configurations. They make the pedal easier to place in pedalboards, amp loops, stereo setups and studio chains, but they are not a substitute for the H90's inserts and Dual Mode.

Eventide Control handles firmware updates, preset management, routing, MIDI mapping and User List import/export. USB-C connectivity is documented as available now. At the time of verification, however, Eventide's product page still labels Bluetooth support for Eventide Control on Mac and iPad as “coming soon”, so it should not be treated as universally available yet.

Who should buy H9 Gen 2?

Moving from H9 Max to H9 Gen 2 makes sense if you want the algorithms added through the H90 platform, prefer deeper editing from the pedal itself or are rebuilding a compact board around one Eventide processor.

Keeping an H9 Max is perfectly reasonable if its 52 algorithms already cover your work, your presets are established and you are comfortable with H9 Control. Gen 2 does not make the earlier pedal obsolete overnight.

H90 remains the more logical choice if you need two Eventide algorithms simultaneously, more elaborate routing, external inserts or two independent stereo paths. Buying H9 Gen 2 and expecting H90-style dual-algorithm operation would start from the wrong assumption.

Buying a used H9, H9 Core or H9 Standard

The used market can still make H9 Max, Standard and Core units interesting, but the generations need to be kept separate.

Eventide currently maintains an H9 MaxOut procedure for registered H9 Standard and H9 Core units. Once the pedal is registered and synced through H9 Control, all 52 H9 Max algorithms can be made available. Eventide also states that a used H9 can qualify after registration; if it is still registered to the previous owner, support needs the serial number to resolve ownership.

MaxOut does not turn an original H9 into a Gen 2. The older hardware remains on the H9 platform and does not gain the newer H90/Gen 2-only algorithms or the redesigned Gen 2 interface.

When assessing a used original H9, check account registration, footswitches and encoder, inputs and outputs, display, power supply and connection to H9 Control. For H9 Gen 2, Eventide's official product page showed $599 at the time this article was verified; that is a time-specific manufacturer reference, not a universal European or used-market price.
