Acoustic guitar body shape is an ergonomic choice first

Dreadnought, OM/000, auditorium, grand-auditorium and jumbo labels help organise steel-string acoustics, but real dimensions vary. Check lower-bout width, body depth and scale rather than assuming every guitar with the same label will feel identical.

A smaller body can be comfortable for seated playing and close-mic recording; a larger body may offer a different low-frequency balance and physical response. Neither is automatically tied to one playing style.

Solid and laminated construction are only part of the picture

A solid top and a laminated top are built differently, but the finished guitar also depends on bracing, thickness, bridge design, neck joint and manufacturing consistency. The same is true of wood-species descriptions: useful information, but not a guaranteed tonal result on their own.

Electro-acoustic models add another system to inspect. An onboard pickup or transducer can make live work easier, but it adds a preamp, battery connection and output socket that should be tested on a used instrument. Ask whether the system is original, whether any side or endpin routing was modified and whether all controls operate quietly.

A 12-string deserves extra attention to neck relief, bridge condition and tuner operation. If the owner has changed string gauge substantially, ask how the guitar was set up for it.

Used acoustic checks are mostly structural

Look closely at the top, bridge, sides, back and neck joint. Cracks, lifting, unusual bulging or previous repairs need context. Fret wear, nut and saddle condition, tuning machines and action determine how much immediate maintenance may be required.
